People’s Choice Awards
This prestigious award honors individuals from the community who give generously of their time and talents
to make Washington County a better place to live.
Carla Charles
For many years, Carla has served organizations providing residential
and personal services to the homeless population of Washington County.
She has been the Board Chair of both St. John’s Shelter and REACH.
From securing grants and funding to gathering the necessary resources for
each organization to carry out its mission, she has given tirelessly of her time
and talent. Further, through grants, donations and fundraising, Carla is tireless
in securing the resources necessary for each organization to carry out its
mission. She is the epitome of service to others.
In her honor, the Community Foundation has created a $5,000 endowment
fund titled, “Carla Charles Fund for St. John’s Shelter.”
Jason Malott
Jason has volunteered in numerous organizations serving Washington County.
From the Historical Society, to Leadership Washington County, to Hospice,
his service to this community spans many causes and touches a variety of
lives. He formerly served on the Board of the Mental Health Center of Western
Maryland, Inc. and was appointed by the Governor to the Washington County
Board of Elections.
He is also a member of the Antietam Exchange Club, Washington County
Genealogy Society, Barbara Ingram School for the Arts Parent Guild, Sons
of the American Legion Post 202 Williamsport and Red Men Tribe #84
Williamsport. He is a 6th generation member of the Downsville Christian
Church and a multi-gallon Red Cross blood donor.
In Jason’s honor, the Community Foundation has created a $5,000
endowment fund titled, “Jason and Melinda Malott Fund for the
Jennifer Fund at Hospice of Washington County.”
Al Martin
Al actively serves on numerous boards including BIFSA, Washington County
Museum of Fine Arts, and CVB. Al has been involved in several community
projects and recently completed the Clara Barton Memorial project and
is currently working with local government to complete a memorial to
General George Washington. He has served in leadership capacities in
the past 30 years on local and regional boards and advisory groups.
In Al’s honor, the Community Foundation has created a $5,000
endowment fund titled, “Alfred E. Martin Fund for Heart of the
Civil War Heritage Area.”
